Workshops in Madrid, held on June 25 and October 1, 2024, took place at the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Mobility, focusing on Spain’s strategy for expanding SSPA. Ministry representatives presented ongoing infrastructure plans, followed by an open discussion with logistics, transport sector stakeholders and parking operators. The sessions underscored the Spanish government’s commitment to addressing theft, migrant security, and driver wellbeing while improving SSPA connectivity. Challenges such as land acquisition, bureaucratic delays, and high energy costs for green parking initiatives were major topics. Recommendations included shifting parking costs to logistics operators, increasing EU collaboration, and creating a transitional system to align Spain’s previous parking certification with the new EU Delegated Regulation.
